Stewart, debutant Thomas help US beat Belgium in WCup opener

SYDNEY (AP) – It’s been a whirlwind week for Alyssa Thomas.

She went on to fly 10,000 miles to Australia to play for the United States in the World Cup, a day after losing in the WNBA Finals on Sunday. Thomas had 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in his debut for the Americans, who beat Belgium 87-72 in the tournament opener on Thursday.

After finding out that she would be on the US roster, she never thought of skipping the World Cup.

“Excited to be a part of this, was waiting for a long time,” said Thomas, 30.

American coach Cheryl Reeve was impressed with what Thomas was able to do with little time.
